Six-day Denial of Service Attack

Nameservers targeted at Joker.com

March 28, 2006 - Over the course of six days, Joker.com, an important domain-name registrar based in Germany, was targeted by a DDoS attack on the company's nameservers. The attack reduced name server performance and availability. Experts reported traffic peaks of 1.3 Gigabits per second on a single line. The huge traffic overloaded Joker's network, causing the main website and 15% of its domains to be affected.

Joker.com responded to the attack by adding more nameservers as well as increasing its bandwidth. These measures seemed to help and the situation slowly returned to normal. Joker had over 550,000 registered domains at the time of the attack.

An increasing number of recent attacks have many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) concerned about DNS vulnerability and the future security requirements to mitigate a large DDoS attack. Some are asking what would have happened if all of the Joker domains had gone down. Many organizations have poor security plans and the vulnerability of DNS only adds to the risk.
