Is IT losing the DNS battle against DDoS attacks?

July 18, 2007 - A survey of 465 IT and business professionals brought forth concerning information about the state of DNS security.

There are few things that can bring entire online businesses down. One of them is the Denial of Service (DoS) attack, targeting the Domain Name Service (DNS) servers. Small online businesses and huge international companies can be targeted and brought down by DoS attacks.

"A DNS server compromised by a hacker could be used to funnel Web surfers to all sorts of phishing attacks and malicious Web sites, and in some cases even could cause havoc with directory services and e-mail," stated Paul Mockapetris, known as the father of DNS technology.

The July 2007 study that queried 465 IT and business professionals resulted in concerning information:

• More than half of the respondents experienced a malware attack
• More than a third was hit by DoS attacks, and both internal and external DNS servers were brought down with the same speed
• 84 percent of the respondents experienced at least one DoS attack
• More that 10 percent received frequent DoS attacks against their network
• 59 percent of the IT and business professionals said that they rarely receive a DoS attack
• 41 percent frequently experienced them
• According to the study, DoS attacks represents 48 percent of all the attacks against DNS servers

This poses a significant problem for online business owners, and leads to the question: "Is IT losing the battle against DNS attacks?"
