DiscountASP.NET DNS Hit by Massive DDoS Attack

Reason for DDoS DNS Attack Remains a Mystery

June 21, 2007 - DiscountASP.NET experienced a massive Distributed Denial of Service (DoS) attack that hit the company's Domain Name Service (DNS) servers and knocked all hosted Web sites offline. The DDoS attack brought everything down, including e-mail. The DDoS attack lasted for two days, and even after mitigation, some users still experienced problems.

A DDoS attack usually employs a bot network, composed of enslaved computers, placed under the remote command of one or more hackers. When these criminals want to bring down an online target, they command the zombie computers to simultaneously send high volumes of requests to the target's DNS servers (the service that translates the friendly addresses into numeric addresses used on the Internet). The amount of data received by the DNS servers quickly floods the DNS servers, rendering them unusable to legitimate users.

At its peak, the DDoS attack had the equivalent of approximately 670 T1 lines. On the second day the powerful DDoS attack resumed and knocked down DiscountASP.NET's network for two days. This resulted in service loss for all of their users.

Many people wondered what the purpose of the DDoS attack was. This question remain without an answer because the chances of catching the DDoS attacker is very slim. DiscountASP.NET managed to mitigate the attack by using services from an enterprise-class DDoS mitigation service.
