November 27, 2006 - Nettica, an Internet infrastructure service provider that offers primary and secondary DNS services to companies that host their own websites, was hit by a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. For a time, there were delays in DNS propagation and in resolving domains using Nettica servers.
Although Nettica believed the network was safe from most Internet-based attacks, this event crippled two of the five DNS servers operated by the company. Name servers translate text-based URLs (like www.nettica.com) into a numeric IP address used by Internet routers to direct traffic. During the time that DNS1 and DNS2 were down, all websites served by these machines could not be reached.
Nettica quickly announced the situation to clients. In the announcement, the company suggested that clients having only DNS1 and DNS2 in their registry should enter the IP address for DNS3, DNS4, and DNS5 IP as well. This measure helped many users get their websites back online. Nettica's Internet security team managed to stop the attack in a short while and all services were returned to normal.
